Hydrow

Overview

The original Hydrow is the machine that put the brand on the map, and it still anchors the lineup as the more affordable sibling to the Pro. It pairs a computer-controlled electromagnetic drag mechanism with a fixed 22-inch HD touchscreen that streams the company's signature filmed rows shot on real rivers, lakes and bays. The resistance is whisper-quiet because there is no flywheel slapping air or sloshing water, which makes early-morning sessions easy to live with in a shared home. Instructors adjust the feel of the pull throughout a class, so the workout responds to the coaching rather than to a manual dial. Unlike the Pro, the screen on the original does not swivel, so off-machine strength and yoga sessions are watched straight on, a small compromise that trims the price. The frame is long and fairly heavy but stores upright using an optional anchor accessory. As with every Hydrow, the experience leans heavily on the subscription: without an active membership the catalogue and live metrics are largely unavailable, and the hardware alone offers little. For someone sold on guided rowing who does not need a rotating display, it remains a strong, polished choice.
