Strongman Equipment

Strongman training is where a home gym gets interesting: instead of a tidy barbell, you carry a loaded yoke, shoulder a sandbag, press a log, and lift an atlas stone off the floor. The implements are heavy, awkward, and brutally effective at building real-world strength and conditioning. Filter by implement to find the event you want to train, by primary use for carries, presses, or pulls, and by whether a piece is plate-loadable so it grows with you.

Strongman Equipment — frequently asked questions

What strongman equipment should a beginner buy first?
Start with a sandbag and a loadable implement or two, because they deliver the most carryover for the least money and space. A heavy sandbag trains cleans, carries, and over-the-shoulder loads all by itself, and a sled adds low-impact conditioning. Yokes, logs, and stones are worth adding once you know you'll keep training events.
Do I need special plates for strongman implements?
Most loadable strongman gear (yokes, farmer's handles, log bars, axle bars, sleds) takes standard 2-inch Olympic plates, so the plates you already own usually work. Bumper plates are nice for log and axle work you might drop, while iron is fine for sleds and carries. Atlas stones and filled sandbags are fixed-weight and don't use plates at all.
Can I do strongman training in a small space or garage?
Yes, with the right picks. Sandbags, stones, and farmer's handles store in a corner and need only a short carry lane. Yokes and sleds need more room — a yoke wants a 10–15 yard lane and a sled needs turf, a driveway, or a pulling strap setup, so check the space an event actually requires before buying.
Are atlas stone molds better than buying finished stones?
A reusable mold is far cheaper per pound and lets you cast stones to any weight with concrete, which is ideal if you want a full ladder of stones. Pre-made stones cost more but save you the messy casting process and cure time. If you only want one or two stones, buy finished; if you want a range, get a mold.
